The vocabulary of storage, defined properly.

Twenty-seven terms that appear in every PKE study, datasheet and tender, defined the way our engineers use them rather than the way brochures do.

Terms, A to Z

Augmentation
The practice of adding battery modules over the system life to offset capacity fade or serve load growth. PKE plans augmentation at design time, which is why the module is the replaceable unit.
BESS
Battery energy storage system: the complete assembly of cells, battery management, power conversion and energy management software operating as one dispatchable asset.
BMS
Battery management system. Senses voltage, current and temperature per cell group, enforces operating limits, balances modules and isolates faults at the smallest practical boundary.
C-rate
The ratio of charge or discharge power to energy capacity. A 1C discharge empties the battery in one hour; Power 250 discharges at up to 1.6C, emptying in under 40 minutes at full output, while Power 300 and Power 500 both discharge at 1C (Power 500's 0.5C figure is its charge rate, not discharge).
Contract demand
The maximum demand in kVA sanctioned by the utility. Exceeding it attracts penalties; peak shaving with storage keeps recorded demand inside it.
Customer Energy Matrix
The PKE sizing artifact: net demand mapped by date and time slot from reconciled meter data, exposing the peaks that set demand charges and the windows where storage earns.
Cycle life
The number of full charge-discharge cycles before capacity falls to a defined threshold. Thermal management and depth-of-discharge policy are the two levers that protect it.
Demand charge
The component of an HT bill priced on maximum recorded demand rather than energy consumed. Reducing the monthly peak reduces it directly.
Dispatch
The scheduled charging and discharging of a storage system against tariff, solar and load. In PKE systems the dispatch plan is simulated before purchase and executed by the EMS after.
DoD
Depth of discharge: how much of total capacity a cycle uses. Shallower cycling extends cycle life; the dispatch study balances DoD against revenue per cycle.
Drawal and injection
Energy taken from the grid versus energy exported to it. The sizing study reconciles both so the load model reflects the site, not billing artifacts.
EMS
Energy management system: the software layer that decides when to charge and discharge. The BMS protects the asset; the EMS runs the business case.
Grid code
The technical rules a generator or storage system must meet to connect: voltage ride-through, frequency behavior and protection settings. PKE systems certify to IEC, EN, VDE, AS and G99/G100 families.
HT settlement data
The utility’s billing-grade record of a high-tension consumer’s interval demand and energy. The primary input to every PKE sizing study.
Hybrid PCS
A power conversion system that manages solar DC input, battery DC and grid AC in one unit, as in the Core Mini, one cabinet instead of separate solar and storage inverters.
IP rating
Ingress protection class. IP55, the Core Mini rating, means dust-protected and protected against water jets, suitable for outdoor Indian sites.
LFP
Lithium iron phosphate cell chemistry. Chosen across the PKE platform for thermal stability, long cycle life and a wide safe operating window.
Liquid cooling
Circulating coolant through cell assemblies instead of conditioning air. Holds tighter cell-to-cell temperature spread at megawatt scale; used on Core 2000 and Vault 5000.
MPPT
Maximum power point tracker: the converter stage that keeps a PV string at its most productive operating point. Four independent MPPTs let the Core Mini serve multi-orientation rooftops.
N+1
A redundancy scheme with one block more than the load requires, so maintenance or a single fault never interrupts supply. Standard for data-center and critical-process architectures.
Off-grid mode
Operation with the grid disconnected, the PCS forming the site’s voltage and frequency. PKE hybrid systems transfer to it in twenty milliseconds or less.
PCS
Power conversion system: the bidirectional inverter between DC cells and AC loads. Its ratings define overload capability and transfer speed.
Peak shaving
Discharging storage during demand peaks to reduce the maximum the utility records, cutting demand charges and protecting contract demand.
RTE
Round-trip efficiency: the share of energy recovered after a full charge-discharge cycle. PKE models economics at 88% DC-AC, the number the meter actually sees.
SoC
State of charge: the fraction of capacity currently stored, the operating variable every dispatch decision reads first.
SoH
State of health: remaining capacity relative to nameplate, the metric augmentation planning tracks over the system life.
ToD tariff
A time-of-day tariff that prices energy differently by slot. The spread between off-peak and peak slots, less round-trip losses, is the arbitrage value storage captures.
